Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. Signs and symptoms vary among people andalso over time. Symptoms include poor coordination, stiff muscles, weak muscles and tremors. There may be problem with sensation, vision, hearing, swallowing and speaking. Often babies with cerebral palsy do not roll over, sit, crawl or walk as early as other children of their age.

Other symptoms include seizures and problem with thinking or reasoning which occur in about 1/3rd   of people with CP. While symptoms may get more noticeable over first few years of life, underlying problems do not worsen over time.

Risk factors for CP:

  • Preterm birth
  • Being a twin
  • Certain infections during pregnancy
  • Difficult delivery

There is no exact correlation found for CP in Ayurvedic literature. While observing the etiology and clinical features, the predominance of Vata is obvious and hence, this disease entity can be classified nearer to Vata dominant condition or Vatavyadhi. While considering pathophysiology and management of CP it can be taken as AvaranajanyaVata (KaphavrithaVata).
